Overview

What is Trimble Connect: Trimble Connect is a cloud-based collaboration platform specifically designed for project stakeholders - including architects, engineers, contractors, and owners - to collaborate, share information, and manage construction projects in a centralized environment.

How to integrate Trimble Connect with Datagrid

Project teams using Trimble Connect as their CDE accumulate coordination records faster than manual follow-up can keep pace with.

The setup includes the following steps:

Prerequisites

To configure the Trimble Connect integration, confirm the following requirements are met:

  • You must have a paid Trimble Connect account with permissions to access the projects and data you want to import into Datagrid.

  • Your Trimble ID must be registered with a corporate domain email.

  • You must request API credentials through Trimble's API credential request form before the integration will work.

API access is not self-serve. You must submit a request through Trimble's review process before credentials are issued.

Connect Trimble Connect

Creating a dataset from the Trimble Connect integration involves selecting the specific data you want to import. Follow these steps to connect and begin your first sync:

  • Click on the "+ Create" button on the top left of the screen.

  • Select the "Connect Apps" item.

  • Search for the Trimble Connect integration from the list.

  • Log in with your Trimble Identity (TID) credentials. Trimble Connect may prompt you to authorize Datagrid's access to your data. Grant the necessary permissions to proceed.

  • Click on the "Next" button.

  • Pick the Trimble Connect data you want to include in your dataset (e.g., Projects, Files, ToDos, BCF Topics).

  • Click on the "Start First Import" button to begin syncing your Trimble Connect dataset.

Authenticate with Trimble Identity

Datagrid authenticates through Trimble Identity (TID) using OAuth 2.0 Authorization Code with PKCE flow.

When you connect, Datagrid redirects to Trimble's identity service. You log in once, and Datagrid manages token refresh automatically. The refresh token must be used within 9 days or the session expires and requires re-authentication.

Trimble Connect does not support OAuth Client Credentials flow, so the initial connection requires an interactive login session. After setup, Datagrid handles all subsequent token management.

Configure your data sync settings

Datagrid imports coordination and project data through Trimble Connect's available API surface. Because Trimble Connect's APIs are pull-based and use timestamp-based change detection rather than webhooks, the integration runs on an incremental polling model.

  • Data objects: Projects, Files and Folders, ToDos, BCF Topics, 3D Model Entities, Property Sets, Views, Organizer Structures, Object Sync

  • Sync direction: Bidirectional for most core entities; read-only for Object Sync

  • Change detection: Timestamp-based incremental polling via Object Sync

Why use Trimble Connect with Datagrid

Datagrid gives project teams a direct path from coordination records to executed workflow outcomes, so teams focus on decisions, exceptions, and next actions instead of manual data routing. Here are reasons to use Trimble Connect with Datagrid:

  • Automated clash report routing: Datagrid's AI agents ingest clash reports, cross-reference discipline assignments, and generate coordination tasks that are routed to responsible subcontractors without manual intervention by the BIM coordinator.

  • Bidirectional BCF Topic management: BCF Topics support two-way synchronization through the open BCF standard, so agents create, update, and resolve issues directly in Trimble Connect.

  • Automatic document classification: AI agents detect new uploads in the CDE and classify files by type (RFI, submittal, shop drawing, or change order), extracting metadata and routing each file to the correct reviewer.

  • Cross-platform data movement: Project teams connect Trimble Connect data with ERP systems, scheduling tools, and field platforms, eliminating manual re-entry across disconnected systems.

  • Proactive risk detection: Agents track open issues, stalled approvals, and unassigned model conflicts across the project environment, surfacing coordination problems before they reach the field.

What you can build with Trimble Connect Datagrid integration

The integration supports multi-step workflows that span clash detection, document processing, estimating, and project risk management. Below are practical builds project teams can deploy with Datagrid's AI agents:

  • Post-clash coordination workflow: When Trimble Connect identifies conflicts across federated BIM models, Datagrid's AI agents ingest the clash list, match each clash to the responsible discipline and subcontractor, generate ToDos with descriptions and assignees, and log the workflow back to the project record.

  • RFI and submittal processing pipeline: Agents monitor the Trimble Connect CDE for new project file uploads, classify each file type, extract the spec section and responsible party, route files to the designated reviewer, and flag overdue items for escalation.

  • BIM-driven element schedules for estimating: An agent watches for model updates in Trimble Connect, extracts structured element data (types, counts, and key properties) from the BIM model, and pushes a formatted element schedule to your estimating platform.

  • Multi-stakeholder risk dashboard: A set of AI agents continuously scans your Trimble Connect project environment, tracking unresolved BCF Topics, overdue ToDos, stalled document approvals, and unassigned model conflicts, then generates a risk summary on a set cadence and triggers escalation workflows for critical items.

Frequently asked questions

Does Trimble Connect have an API?

Yes. Trimble Connect exposes a REST API surface covering projects, files and folders, ToDos, BCF Topics, 3D model entities, property sets, views, and organizer structures. Authentication runs through Trimble Identity (TID) using OAuth 2.0, and API access requires a paid Trimble Connect license with a corporate-domain Trimble ID.

What authentication method does Trimble Connect use with Datagrid?

Trimble Connect authenticates through OAuth 2.0 Authorization Code flow with Trimble Identity (TID). PKCE is the recommended variant. API requests require a Bearer access token, and the first connection requires an interactive login session. After setup, Datagrid handles token refresh automatically, but the refresh must occur within 9 days or the session expires.

What data objects can Datagrid sync from Trimble Connect?

Datagrid accesses projects, files, folders, ToDos, BCF Topics, 3D model entities, property sets, views, and organizer structures. Most core entities support both read and write operations. Object Sync is available as a read-only incremental polling mechanism for change detection.

Does the integration support bidirectional data sync?

Yes. Most core entities, including projects, files, ToDos, and property sets, support read and write operations. BCF Topics are the strongest bidirectional entity because they support live two-way synchronization through the BCF standard. Object Sync is read-only and is used for timestamp-based change detection.
